HEAT Clinical Practice Guideline and Resource Kit Now Available: NAPNAP's HEATSM (Healthy Eating and Activity Together) Initiative Releases Identifying and Preventing Overweight in Childhood Clinical Practice Guideline and Resource Kit. The goal of the Healthy Eating and Activity Together (HEAT) Initiative is to improve child health through culturally appropriate interventions that enhance the family's ability to achieve the ideal balance between nutrition and physical activity to support optimal growth and wellness. To help address the issue of childhood overweight and ensure that children develop healthy habits that will keep them fit and healthy for a lifetime, the HEAT Clinical Practice Guideline: Identifying and Preventing Overweight in Childhood was designed for use by nurse practitioners who work with children from infancy through adolescence in ambulatory settings. This guideline applies to all healthy children, from newborns on, with secondary application to parents and other family members. Although you may have received a complimentary copy of the HEAT CPG as a Journal of Pediatric Health Care March/April 2006 supplement, the spiral bound, user-friendly edition of the CPG has the following BONUS items: - Selected HEAT Clinical Practice Guideline recommendations include an apple icon that appears whenever HEAT Resource Kit materials (sold separately) developed specifically for the HEAT guideline are available to help practitioners implement a recommendation. These materials include a Family History, age-appropriate Assessment Checklists for nutrition and physical activity, and Educational Tip Sheets for the four age groups.
Additional appendix items: - The HEAT Guideline Overview is a large table that provides a consolidated overview of recommendations across all the ages included in the guideline. This overview also contains the apple icon to alert practitioners to the availability of custom designed materials created to support implementation of the HEAT Clinical Practice Guideline recommendations. Again, these items can be found in the HEAT Resource Kit.
- The HEAT Implementation Audit Checklist is a checklist for practice settings, which assists practitioners in determining whether they have the office systems and resources to carry out the guideline recommendations.
