NAPNAP Immunization Challenges Survey

A recent survey conducted by the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) of its members, and funded by GlaxoSmithKline, found that nurse practitioners (NPs) encounter significant barriers in trying to immunize their patients on-time according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended schedule. The survey of more than 700 NPs revealed important immunization challenges that exist in their offices. National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID)

New Online Adolescent Vaccination Toolkit Available for Health Care Professionals
(Posted 1/14/09) The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), Adolescent Vaccination: Bridging from a Strong Childhood Foundation to a Healthy Adulthood, Call to Action and accompanying toolkit are now available online at www.nfid.org/adolescentimmunization. All materials have been updated to reflect the 2007 National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen), recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and 2008 CDC expanded influenza vaccination recommendation that includes all children 6 months through 18 years of age.

Improve Influenza Vaccination in Children with Asthma
New resources to help increase influenza vaccination children with asthma are now available from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID). Click www.nfid.org to access various tools and strategies that can be customized for use in clinical settings to help address immunization barriers and improve parent education. NAPNAP supports the goals of NFID's initiative and encourages members to share these materials with colleagues.

NFID American Journal of Medicine Supplement
(Posted 6/30/08) A supplement to The American Journal of Medicine July 2008 issue, “Expanding the Influenza Vaccination Season: A New Paradigm for Increasing Immunization Rates,” calls on health care providers to increase immunization rates by offering vaccines at every opportunity throughout the entire influenza season. This supplement, sponsored by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, can be accessed, free of charge, at www.amjmed.com.


Task Force “I Statement” Videos Now Available

(Posted 1/5/09) The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issues "I statements" when the evidence is insufficient to make a recommendation for or against the provision of a preventive service. In these new videos, the Task Force members talk about "I statements" and how clinicians can apply them in practice. Video topics include: screening for prostate cancer; screening for coronary heart disease with exercise tolerance testing in adults; screening and interventions for overweight children and adolescents; when the evidence is insufficient for adult recommendations; and, when the evidence is insufficient for pediatric recommendations.


Advanced Practice Nursing & Physician Assistants Web Page

(Posted 12/23/08) The Medicare Learning Network (MLN) is pleased to announce the availability of the Advanced Practice Nursing & Physician Assistants (APN/PA) web page. This dedicated web page is for Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) advanced practice nurses and physician assistants who provide services to Medicare beneficiaries. From this web page, you will be able to access and peruse the Medicare FFS program topics in order to keep abreast of policy and operational updates specific to Advanced Practice Nurses and Physician Assistants.

FDA MedWatch - OTC Cough and Cold Medications for Children

(Posted 10/23/08) FDA notified healthcare professionals and consumers that the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) is voluntarily modifying the product labels for consumers of over the counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines to state "do not use" in children under 4 years of age. Unapproved Drugs: Drugs Marketed in the United States That Do Not Have Required FDA Approval

(Posted 10/17/08) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a new, improved marketed unapproved drug Web site with a section particularly for healthcare professionals. The site explains the risks posed by unapproved drugs and gives helpful information on how to protect patients.
The site includes:

  • Video and audio programs, given by FDA physicians and regulators that can be accessed online or downloaded
  • Questions and answers, public health advisories, and other documents
  • Enforcement actions taken by FDA (by drug class and by firms)
  • Background information about marketed unapproved drugs

Change in Albuterol Inhalers

(Posted 7/1/08) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is seeking your help in an important child health safety issue throughout the United States. Albuterol inhalers that contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) won’t be sold in the U.S. after December 31, 2008. Albuterol inhalers that contain hydrofluoroalkanes (HFAs) will take the place of albuterol CFC inhalers.

The company that makes albuterol CFC inhalers will stop making them before December 31, 2008. If your patients are still using albuterol CFC inhalers, talk with them about switching now to an albuterol HFA inhaler. There is important use information that you and your patients will need to know to assure that albuterol HFA inhalers are used properly and deliver doses of albuterol that comparable to the CFC inhalers that they replace. Please visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration albuterol website for answers to commonly asked questions, and an FDA Consumer article (both in English and Spanish). Both can be read online or printed out for your patients. A public health advisory (and accompanying audio podcast), a print public service announcement with graphic, and a press release are also posted. New Medicine Record from the FDA

(Posted 9/20/07) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a new tool, “My Medicine Record,” to help your patients keep track of the prescription and over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements they use and to help them exchange this information with you and their other health care professionals. The record can help you review all the products your patient uses, check for possible interactions, make treatment recommendations, and update your records.

Patients can print the record and enter the information by hand. They can also download the record, enter the information on the computer, save it, and print. When something changes only the new information has to be entered. The chart, instructions, and question guide are written in plain language with a font size that makes it useful for consumers of all ages. The National Environmental Education and Training Foundation (NEETF)

NEETF has a new publication entitled, Environmental Management of Pediatric Asthma: Guidelines for Health Care Providers . The guidelines are designed to help pediatric primary care providers advise families about environmental interventions to help reduce or eliminate triggers for children diagnosed with asthma, the nation's leading pediatric chronic illness. The publication is filled with practical strategies for integrating environmental management of asthma into health professional's curriculum and clinical practice. The guidelines were developed and peer-reviewed by expert panels, including NAPNAP members Karen Rance and Lauren Sorce and are built on current best practices and include competencies for management of environmental asthma triggers in pediatric care; a quick, user-friendly environmental history form; intervention guidelines for specific environmental triggers; patient flyers that are perforated for easy duplication; and references. NEETF has launched a new website and environmental health training tools for pediatric health care providers. The website features PowerPoint Presentations and Resources developed by leading experts in the field of pediatric environmental health education.
