President

Overview of Responsibilities:

The President shall be the chief elected officer of the Association. The President shall preside at meetings of both the Assembly and the Board, shall implement such parliamentary rules as are necessary and serve as the spokesperson for the Association. The President shall cause policy made by the Executive Board to be implemented. The President shall appoint all committees and the chairperson thereof; serve as an ex-officio member of all standing committees except the Nominations Committee; and perform and discharge all duties incident to the office of President and such other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Board.

Time Requirement:

Approximately 25 hours per week.
  • One (1) day New Board Member Orientation Meeting the last weekend of June.
  • Three (2 - 3) day Executive Board Meetings per year (one meeting in the fall, one held in conjunction with the NAPNAP Annual Conference, and a 2 day June Board meeting following the New Board Orientation meeting).
  • One annual Strategic Planning Meeting usually held in conjunction with the Fall Board Meeting.
  • One annual meeting with the AAP usually held in January in Washington, DC or Chicago.
  • Regularly scheduled conference calls with the Executive Board. (Approximately one hour in length, held every 1–2 months when there is not an Executive Board Mtg.)
  • Participates in regularly scheduled Executive Committee Conference calls (4 - 5 per year)
  • Participates in regularly scheduled conference calls with the President-elect, Immediate Past President, and the Executive Director (about twice a month)
  • Monthly Legislative Conference Call.
  • Monthly or Bi-Monthly teleconference calls with Standing Committees, task forces, National Special Initiatives work groups (KySS and HEAT) and other workgroups.
  • Monitor e-mail on a daily basis.

Note: On June 26, 2008 the Executive Board approved a new honorarium program for President-Elect and President.

Primary Functions:

  1. Serves as a voting member of the Executive Board in case of a tie and as a voting member of the Executive Committee.
  2. Serves as NAPNAP officialspokespersonand representative/liaison to other organizationsor associations.
  3. Approves the agendas, presides over, and approves the draft of all meeting minutes of the Executive Board and the Association including but not limited to:
    • Executive Committee
    • Conference Call Meetings
    • General Sessions of the Executive Board
    • Executive Sessions of the Executive Board
    • Annual Business Meeting of the Association
    • Orientation Meeting
  4. Evaluates and monitors the policy decisions and procedures of the Executive Board and Executive Committee.
  5. Selects or approves chairpersons and members for all Executive Board task forces (short term, without Board approval), and Executive Board committees (Board approved), and NAPNAP representatives and liaisons with other organizations. Outlines the purposes and duties of the task forces and committees and monitors their progress.

  6. Determine the appropriateness of NAPNAP involvement with nursing and other organizations and approve related activities including: legislative actions, endorsements, and requests for support.
  7. Serve on the following Standing Committees:
    • Health Policy Committee
    • Strategic Planning Committee
    • Leadership Development Committee
  8. Serve as an ex-officio member of all standing committees, task forces and work groups including but not limited to:
    • Program Committee
    • Research Committee
    • Communications Committee
    • Clinical Practice Committee
    • Professional Issues Committee
    • Membership Committee
    • Membership Survey
    • Finance Committee
  9. Orients and mentors the President – Elect
    • Establishes a plan for orientation of the President-elect’s year at the annual orientation meeting.
    • Includes President-elect in all major activities during year as president
    • Encourages President-elect to take a leadership role within the organization
    • Maintains ongoing communication with the President-Elect
  10. Submits Annual Activities for the year and Annual Reports:
    • Annual Activities/Goals and Time Table for the Strategic Plan (September)
    • Provides input in the development of the annual budget (August)
    • Written or verbal report on activities for the Executive Board Meetings (Due Fall, Spring, and Summer)
    • Annual report for the General Business Meeting (February)
    • Provides Executive Board with regular updates on Association Activities as needed to maintain open and effective communication among Board members, the general membership, and all other associations.
  11. Responds to all correspondence that requires the President’s attention.
  12. Provides a bi-monthly “President’s Message” for the Journal of Pediatric Health Care. (April, June, August, October, December and February).
  13. Serves as a role model and provides positive mentoring experiences for potential future NAPNAP leaders.
  14. Involved in contract and project negotiations with industry and professional organizations as required.
  15. Opportunity to write a President’s message in the PNP newsletter.
  16. Approves recommendations of Washington Representative and Health Policy Chair to sign on/or support legislation.
