President Elect

Overview of Responsibilities:

"The President-Elect shall perform the duties of the office of President in the absence of the President or in the President's inability to act. When so acting, the President-Elect shall have all the powers of, and be subject to, all of the restrictions placed upon the President."

Selection Guidelines:

  • Be actively engaged in practice and/or education, administration, research with emphasis in Maternal/Child Health area.
  • Have organizational, public speaking, and writing ability consistent with the responsibilities of the office.
  • Have flexibility in time off from employment and sufficient time and energy to meet the time requirements of a three (3) year commitment to NAPNAP with maximal time spent during the presidential year. See Time Requirement for President.
  • Have the necessary maturity and diplomacy to deal effectively with persons inside and outside the Association.
  • Be available to serve as an Executive Board member during a three (3) year commitment.
  • Have knowledge of parliamentary procedure.
  • Shall be elected by and from the active members of the Association for the term of three (3) years.
  • Has served on the NAPNAP Executive Board or on the executive board of a national organization. May be considered if the candidate has served as a president of a NAPNAP chapter, as chair of a NAPNAP national committee, or other experiences that provide national leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of parliamentary procedure.

Time Requirement:

Approximately 15 - 20 hours per week.
  • One (1) day Orientation Meeting the last weekend of June.
  • hree (2 – 3) day Executive Board Meetings per year (one meeting in the fall, one held in conjunction with the NAPNAP Annual Conference and a 2 day June Board Meeting following the New Board Orientation meeting).
  • One annual Strategic Planning Retreat usually held in conjunction with the Fall Board Meeting.
  • One annual meeting with the AAP usually held in January in Washington, DCor Chicago.
  • Regularly scheduled conference call with the Executive Board. (Approximately one hour in length, held every 1 – 2 months when there is not an Executive Board Mtg.)
  • Participates in regularly scheduled Executive Committee Conference Calls (4 - 5 per year).
  • Participates in regularly scheduled conference calls with the President, Immediate Past President and the Executive Director (about twice a month).
  • Monthly Legislative Conference Call.

Note: On June 26, 2008 the Executive Board approved a new honorarium program for President-Elect and President.

Primary Functions:

  1. In the absence of the President, presides over the meetings of the association.
  2. Serves as a voting member of the Executive Committee and the Executive Board.
  3. Participates in leadership development opportunities in preparation for role as President.
  4. Participates in the meetings of the Executive Board and the Association including, but not limited to:
    • Executive Committee
    • Conference Call Meetings
    • General Sessions of the Executive Board
    • Executive Sessions of the Executive Board
    • Strategic Planning Meeting
    • Annual Business Meeting of the Association
    • Special Meetings as called by the President
  5. Serves on the Selection Panel responsible for the selection of NAPNAP Awards including:
    • McNeil Scholarships
    • McNeil Grants-in-Aid
    • Henry K. Silver Award
    • Loretta C. Ford Distinguished Fellow Award
    • Nurse-in-Washington Internship Scholarship
  6. Acts as membership coordinator in collaboration with the National Office staff and the Director of Membership and Communication. Serves as Chair of the following committees:
    • Membership Committee
    • Membership Survey Committee
  7. Participates on the following standing committees and other committees or task forces as appointed by the president:
    • Executive Committee
    • Health Policy/Legislative Committee
    • Strategic Planning Committee
    • Research Committee
    • Professional Issues Committee
    • Selection Panel for:
      • Henry K. Silver Award
      • Loretta C. Ford Distinguished Fellow Award
    • Leadership Development Committee
  8. Appoints chairpersons for the appointed Executive Board Committees, liaisons, task forces, and committees for the year of presidency. (February-March). Includes:
    • Voting Executive Board Committee Chair
      • Health Policy
      • Education Chair
      • Certification Chair
      • Research Chair
    • Non-Voting Committee Chair
      • Strategic Planning Chair
    • Other liaisons/representatives
      • Certification Board Members
      • NAPNAP Foundation Executive Board Members
      • Nursing Organizations Members
  9. Coordinates and reports on the activities of the liaisons and representatives for NAPNAP with the Director of Professional Affairs.
  10. Submits Reports for Annual Activities as follows:
    • Annual Activities/Goals and Time Table for the Strategic Plan (September)
    • Provides input in the development of the annual budget (August)
    • Written or verbal report on activities for the Executive Board Meetings (Fall, Spring and Summer)
    • Annual report for the General Business Meeting (February)
  11. Serves as a role model and provides positive mentoring experiences for potential future NAPNAP leaders.
